A Purpose-Driven Reopening

Liberation Station Bookstore’s reopening in Raleigh in late 2025 was more than a ribbon-cutting — it was a declaration of presence, purpose, and possibility. Recognized as North Carolina’s only Black-owned children’s bookstore, Liberation Station was founded out of a deep need for representation in literacy and space where Black children feel fully seen.

Founder Victoria Scott-Miller opened the bookstore in June 2023 after realizing, during an extended search for books that reflected her own children’s lives, that such stories were—and still are—too rare. What began as a family-led venture soon became a community institution, one that aims to create space where books, culture, and joy intersect in intentional ways. After closing temporarily in 2024 due to threats, the bookstore’s return on the fourth day of Kwanzaa was both symbolic and strategic, grounded in collective support and resilience.

Excerpt from the Original Article

“Reading is fundamental. And for Black children? Not only is reading fundamental, it is also necessary.”

Liberation Station — founded by Victoria Scott-Miller — reopened in Raleigh after a period of strategic rest. The space continues to offer not only curated books but also intentional design that affirms that children belong in every story.

Why This Story Matters

Liberation Station’s reopening resonates for several reasons:

  • Representation in Literature: Liberation Station tackles the foundational need for books that reflect Black children’s lives, experiences, and dreams.
  • Space as Affirmation: The bookstore goes beyond transactions, creating a space where community, culture, and dignity meet.
  • Resilience and Strategy: Closing due to targeted threats and reopening in a spirit of strategic strength, Liberation Station shows how community support and care can sustain purpose-driven work.
  • Holistic Mission: Liberation Station isn’t just about books — it’s about fostering joy, care, and belonging through intentional design and programming.

By reclaiming a space in Raleigh and reopening with energy and intention, Liberation Station continues to shape a future where Black children see themselves not on the margins of stories, but at the center of them.
