To which we say, why not? One day while shopping for books that represent our two boys, Emerson and Langston, we realized that narratives centering characters like them were not readily available. So we decided to change that. What sets us apart? This family of four reads every book before it hits our shelves – which means you get four vantage points of the Black experience approving each title.
Since 2019, we have trailblazed the industry as an independent, globally recognized children’s bookstore. At our core, we believe in making representation accessible and amplifying Black voices. As booksellers and storytellers, we thrive by seeking unconventional spaces to promote literacy, and pioneer creative programming that will ensure Black children are seeing themselves and being seen.
As booksellers, we realize that books are an investment – and sometimes a luxury. This is why we have established libraries throughout the United States. The Liberation Station Black Lit Library is a safe reading space for children of color and an extension of our bookstore. We do this by partnering with businesses and organizations to permanently install curated libraries for children of color.
